The next stage of the project is to import the level into Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) , to do this; in Maya to export the assets as FBX files; then import into UE4. The door is then imported separately as an asset with animation.
The biggest problem at this stage was the auto collusion that was enabled. This caused to the start player being spawned outside the room and fall in the void. To correct this; the auto collusion is deleted and then box collusion meshes was added in the asset editor on a initial temporary basis. As soon as this was done the level could be played in the editor; this time the player being spawned into the level.
